چکیده

204 words) We have developed a novel method to derive scale information from quasi-stationary images, which relies on a rotation-guided multi-scale analysis of features derived from Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrices (GLCM). Unlike other methods for multi-scale texture characterization, our method does not require rotation-invariant textural features, but instead uses orientation information derived from the image to constrain the algorithm. Our method computes GLCM textural features on a “stencil” that follows the local orientation field. It compares features obtained from a sliding window that scans the whole image with those present on a user-selected reference pattern. The method then calculates a similarity measure between textural features derived from the whole image and those derived from the reference pattern. By applying different affine transforms to the stencil used for sampling the reference pattern, we are able to measure the similarity between regions of the image and different dilated versions of the reference pattern, and hence perform a multi-resolution analysis of the image. For a given region of an image, our method is able to find the most likely scale. Therefore it can estimate the stationarity of the image in terms of scale, which has important applications to Multipoint Geostatistics. We tested the method on the Brodatz textures database.

Rain Cells Associated with Atmospheric Fronts over the Ocean Studied by Spaceborne Sar and Weather Radar Data

Spaceborne SAR images acquired over the ocean in conjunction with weather radar images are well suited to study atmospheric fronts in coastal areas. In this paper we confine ourselves to study quasi-stationary atmospheric fronts off the east coast of Taiwan which are located typically 3070 km offshore. These quasistationary atmospheric fronts were first detected on ERS SAR images [5]. In [5] we...

Invariant Matching of Texture for Content-Based Image Retrieval

Texture-based image retrieval is a very di cult task, especially for retrieving images of natural scene. Such images contain multiple texture patterns that may vary in intensity, scale, and orientation but still look the same to humans. Existing methods have been successful in retrieving images that contain single uniform texture but their performance deteriorates when retrieving natural scene ...

A Westward-Intensified Decadal Change in the North Pacific Thermocline and Gyre-Scale Circulation

From the early 1970s to the mid-1980s, the main thermocline of the subarctic gyre of the North Pacific Ocean shoaled with temperatures at 200–400-m depth cooling by 18–48C over the region. The gyre-scale structure of the shoaling is quasi-stationary and intensified in the western part of the basin north of 308N, suggesting concurrent changes in gyre-scale transport. A similar quasi-stationary c...
